The mechanism of a vine wrapping around a structure is from the touch.  Hormones in the plant actually allow the cells on the opposite side to lengthen while keeping those nearest the object the same size.  This produces a curved stem.

The same can be observed with asparagus.  If a growing spear is damaged on one side by hail or insects, it too will curl.
