January 2013 Workshop – Brush Cherry

Bonsai is all about the details. It’s the smallest details in a tree that give the most reward. Eugenia Myrtifolia (aka Brush Cherry) is full of little details that make a big impact. Take its small white powder-puff flowers, and follow them up with magenta cherries. If that isn’t enough, there’s the fiery red new growth against its shiny green leaves, perfectly sized for bonsai. Yes, Brush Cherry are quite a species for bonsai.

And this January 26th, 2013 we’ll be holding a workshop, for beginners to intermediate hobbyists, using these great trees. You can learn more in Winter Workshop 2013 flyer (PDF) or online. Also be sure to check out more information about Brush Cherry for bonsai.

  • What can I say? This was an excellent class, well taught and easy to follow. I had the most challenging tree in the class (so I was told), and thanks to Dave it looks absolutely beautiful. I would recommend taking a class if you are new to bonsai or even experienced.
Thank you Dave for the wonderful day.. Also, nice bike…

    • Gary, Thanks for the good word.
Your tree presented a challage unlike the other trees aound the table.
In short order, here’s what we did…
1)Changed the trunk line by tilting; so it wouldn’t appear so straight.
2)Cut the tree back and utilized a vigorous side branch which gave-way for more movement; reduced height and added taper.
3)Wire was used to get everything moving in the right direction and the results are you get a half decent tree.

It was a good day in bonsai. Dave

      • It is turning out to be quite the tree. I love it.I will be at the next class in April, as my wife keeps getting gift certificates.. LOL All in all great teacher and very easy to follow.
